A cautious strategy mainly holds a mix of defensive assets - gold (GLD), the dollar (UUP), consumer staples (XLP) and short-term Treasury (SHY) - when the market shows no sharp decline or excessive drawdowns. It switches to leveraged equity funds - UPRO or TQQQ - only after a brief rally or when the S&P 500's recent return is negative but the leveraged fund has just surged, and it adds long-term Treasury (TMF) or inverse volatility weighting when the market is calm and drawdowns are small.
